في المقابل

بعض المصطلحات التي نستخدمها ليس لها معنى خاص في علم البيولوجيا، وأبرزها "التعاون" و"المعاملة بالمِثل". فلا يوجد أي تعريف بيولوجي خاص يختلف عن تعريفها العام.

التعاون سلوك يستفيد منه الطرفان في الوقت نفسه، ولا يوجد أي تكلفة يدفعها الطرفان المتعاونان. والمعاملة بالمثل شكل من أشكال التبادل الاجتماعي المشترك؛ فأنت تسدي إليَّ معروفًا وفي المقابل أقدِّم أنا لك خدمة. وقد أتكبد بعض التكلفة الآن لكى أنفعك، في مقابل أن تتكبد أنت الآخر المشقة كى تنفعني فى المستقبل. إن مشاركة المعروف في إطار التبادل المشترك قد يمتد زمنيًا؛ فتمِد يد المساعدة الآن كي تجد من يمد لك يد العون لاحقا.

ولا شك أن التعاون والمعاملة بالمثل لا يعتبران -عامةً- فضيلة أخلاقية لدى البشر، ولا يعد قصورهما دلالة على الشر. ولعل هذا هو السبب في عدم بذل أي جهد لمنح هذه المفاهيم معنىً خاصًا في العلوم، إذ إنها لا تحمل في طياتها أي ثقل أخلاقي.

Some of our terms have no special meaning in biology, notably cooperation and reciprocity. There’s no special biological definition that is distinct from ordinary usage.

 

Cooperation is behavior in which both parties benefit at the time of the interaction. There is typically no cost to the cooperators, only benefit. Reciprocity is a form of mutual social exchange—you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. I may incur some cost now, in order to benefit you, with the expectation that you will later incur some cost to benefit me. In reciprocal exchange, the sharing of favors sometimes stretches out in time—you help now so that later you might in turn be helped.

 

Of course, neither cooperation nor reciprocity are generally considered moral virtues in humans, nor is the lack of these behaviors the mark of an evil or bad person. This is perhaps why no effort has been made to give these concepts a special meaning in science, for they don’t carry much moral weight.
